The Runic Inscriptions of Maeshow, Orkney
By Michael P. Barnes
Published by Institutionen för nordiska språk at Uppsala University, 1994. First Edition. Soft cover book with wrap. 298 pages including the index.
This is a rare and important academic volume, it offers a detailed and authoritative study of the Norse runes carved into the chambered cairn of Maeshowe, one of the most significant Viking Age sites in the British Isles. Barnes examines over thirty inscriptions, providing transcriptions, translations, and commentary that illuminate the linguistic, poetic, and personal dimensions of the Norse presence in Orkney.
The book places the inscriptions in historical and archaeological context, referencing the 19th-century rediscovery of the site and its subsequent documentation. It includes a scholarly apparatus and bibliography that make it a valuable resource for researchers in Scandinavian philology, runology, and medieval history. Though originally distributed by the Viking Society for Northern Research, copies are now extremely scarce and rarely appear on the secondary market.
