The Hound of the Baskervilles
By Arthur Conan Doyle
Published by George Newnes, London, 1902. First Edition / First Issue with "you" instead of "your" (on page 13, line 3). Hardback, 8vo, decorative cloth binding, 358, [i]pp, illustrated with 16 illustrations by Sidney Paget. This is Conan Doyle’s third Sherlock Holmes novel. With this copy there has been an error with the binder as the contents page and list of illustrations have been repeated at the front of the book. (so two contents pages and 2 pages listing the illustrations).
CONDITION
A very good copy. The cloth binding is very good with just some light signs of age / soiling to the spine and rear board (see images). Bookplate to inside front board. Age-toning to endpapers. All contents present and pages in good clean condition throughout with no foxing, stains, tears etc. No writing or names to the book. All 16 plates present and in very good order. Overall a very good first edition.
SYNOPSIS
Dr. James Mortimer asks Sherlock Holmes to investigate Sir Charles Baskerville’s mysterious death and protect Sir Henry, the new heir. Sir Henry travels to Baskerville Hall on the desolate Dartmoor, where the family is haunted by a legend: a gigantic, supernatural hound that supposedly pursues the Baskervilles. Holmes sends Dr. Watson to watch over him, while strange clues, suspicious neighbors, an escaped convict, and eerie sounds on the moor deepen the mystery.
Watson uncovers parts of the puzzle, and Holmes secretly joins the investigation. They eventually discover that the “curse” is part of a murder plot: a local man is using a fierce dog to frighten and kill the Baskerville heirs so he can claim the estate. Holmes and Watson stop the plan, and the supernatural legend is explained by ordinary—though terrifying—means.
