The temple architecture of India has a long, complex and varied history. This monograph focuses on the 7th to 10th centuries and the crucial developments in temple architecture during this time. Gwalior (or Gopaksetra) is one of the few regions to preserve temples and sculpture of the period intact and is therefore critical for understanding temple architecture in the rest of northern India. Using an integrated method of analysis, the book draws on archaeological, textual, formal and cultural studies and is illustrated with temple plans and photographs. The closing chapter explores temple patronage in an attempt to put the buildings in their social and historical context.
