The social history of sixteenth century Scotland is essentially that of a rural people and localised social life. Making extensive use for the first time of much source material which has become accessible to researchers during the past fifty years, this new study describes the circumstances of rural social life in the period demonstrating that, in spite of important political and religious changes at national level rural society bore signs of stability and continuity not generally realised.

Central issues in the social history of the period are thoroughly examined, including the often misunderstood principles of kindly tenancy and the effects of the spread of feu-ferm tenure, and some of the rich but virtually untapped source material found in testaments is used to illustrate standards of living and the patterns of family life. The examination of these themes relating to Scotland as a whole has unearthed a good deal of local history for different parts of the country, for what is a comparatively early period and details of the lives of many individuals who have never before found their way into the history books.
