Historic buildings consultant Morriss uses his practical experience to good effect as he describes how roads have been made and how they have served history. He begins by describing how road archaeology works, its tools and the information it gleans from sites, road engineering, including earthworks, tunnels and road surfaces, river crossings such as fords and bridges, the buildings along roads such as bridge chapels, inns, manufacturing sites, garages and car parks, signs, and public transport. Along with his text he includes a number of well-chosen and informative illustrations, including a collection of road signs worthy of being printed as its own poster.
