A comprehensive history of the development of the road system in the county from the earliest times, through the Roman period down to the improvements of the 18th and 19th centuries.
The book contains many verbatim minute records relating to the building of the bridges and the setting up of the toll roads and turnpikes. Contains a series of hand-tipped in photographs along with line drawings.
At the rear is a full colour reproduction of the map published in 1807 based on Crawford's survey. The map is printed on A3 art paper and is folded away in its own pocket. Further copies of the map are available, uncreased, suitable for framing.
James Robertson was the County Surveyor for Dumfriesshire, as such he has had the opportunity to compile an extremely valuable addition to the written history of Dumfries & Galloway. This edition is limited to 500 copies. Each volume is numbered by hand.
