Poetry of the Carolingian Renaissance

by Peter Godman

Published by Cardiff: University of Wales Press, 1985.

8vo., 364pp,inc bibliography, Index of names and pseudonyms and general index. Blue cloth boards, gilt title. Blue dust jacket.

This scholarly volume offers a penetrating study of Latin poetry during the Carolingian Empire, exploring the literary contributions of figures such as Alcuin, Theodulf, and Ermoldus Nigellus. A key reference in medieval studies, it situates Carolingian verse within the broader context of classical revival, Christian ideology, and imperial politics. Ideal for collectors of medieval literature, historians of the Holy Roman Empire, and students of Latin philology, this edition is in very good condition with light shelf wear and a clean, unmarked interior. A foundational work for understanding the intellectual legacy of Charlemagne’s court and the cultural ambitions of the Carolingian Renaissance.

Condition

Very good condition. Boards are excellent, text block is sound and tight. Dust jacket shows some minimal wear. The text on front and rear of dust jacket is difficult to read, appears faded.  However this seems to be prevalent on all copies we found online.

All contents present and pages are crisp and clean throughout and free from any names or writing etc. Overall a very good copy.

PLEASE NOTE: Over the next week or so we will be listing around 150 hard-to-find titles relating to welsh and scottish, medieval studies, icelandic sagas, celts, picts, archaeology, religious and spiritual beliefs, witchcraft and magic, medieval women . . . so keep an eye on our latest auctions
