This book by one of the classic railway historians, was a bestseller when it first appeared. Volume one deals with the history and construction of railways and the "Railway Mania" of the early days of steam. It provides an insight into railway developments and describes how the mighty works of railway construction were accomplished without the aid of today's engineering plant. Volume two describes railway operation and administration in surprising details. Nothing seems to be omitted; locomotives and stock servicing, signalling, driving, firing, telegraphs, Royal Trains and Pullman cars, all receive full coverage.
Both volumes are fully illustrated bringing the subject to vivid life for both the enthusiast and the modeller.
