Preface:
O' the people of a maritime country, stories of the perils and providences endured and experienced, by those who have had their path in the great waters, must always present points of interest peculiarly their own. Nor will such narratives to any extent be otherwise than attractive to the reader when the eye-witnesses of the scenes are allowed to describe these, as far as practicable, in their own way. In compiling the following pages a preference has been shown towards personal descriptions by the ship wrecked seaman, the passenger, and the adventurer, when bearing the marks of authenticity. Most of the tales of the sea now re-told have been rewritten or condensed, so as to give all the main facts of each, but without unnecessary iteration.
