Preface:
The following pages need no formal introduction. They were written, not with any serious intention of making a book, but simply as the mood moved one when surrounded by the sights and sounds of our beautiful sea-girt parish.
They are the lighter musings of a country minister, who loves at times to turn aside from the graver themes of life and duty, and find rest and relaxation in watching the ever-varying movements of the birds. And if one may judge from the numerous requests received from time to time, that the occasional sketches should be cast into some more permanent form, there must be many another lover of the open air who is thinking along similar lines.
After all, if one has spent the major part of his life on some favourite stream, why should he not do something to sing its praises, and make it, to his own heart at least, something like classic ground?
