Etude Suivie D'une Liste Des Prisonniers de la Bastille (1659-1789)
By Frantz Funck-Brentano.
Published by Imprimerie Nationale, Paris, 1903. First Edition. French Language. In paper covered boards, Folio, the book measures approx. 13 3/4" x 10 1/4" with liii and 482 pages and 12 wonderful illustrations. Text in French.
A scarce book that contains an account of the history and types of lettres de cachet that were used in France. This is followed by a fascinating list of prisoners of the Bastille with reasons for their imprisonment.
Lettres de cachet were letters signed by the King of France and closed with the royal seal. They contained orders directly from the king, often to enforce arbitrary actions that could not be appealed. They were often penal, meaning a subject could be imprisoned without trial or opportunity of defence.
CONDITION
Good clean condition throughout - small dent to the bottom edge of the boards and light toning to the edges of boards. Hinges secure with no cracking. Binding tight and square and with all contents present including all plates. Pages good throughout. Some remain uncut at the top. Overall a good first edition. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall
