FROM THE FRONT FLAP OF THE DUST JACKET:
"The Day of the Triffids . . . John Wyndham . . . London had gone blind -- except for the lucky few who missed seeing the ‘entertainment,’ the pale green flickering light in the heavens . . . Now was the chance for the triffids to take over . . . The triffids had caused considerable excitement when they first appeared, but people soon lost their curiosity. There was nothing so odd about a plant that could walk. They were harmless, after their sting had been removed, and they were an excellent source of food. But now . . . At first there was chaos. The few who could see, people like Bill Masen and Josella Playton, were helpless in the panic of a sightless London. Together they fought against the plans of those who wanted to revert to the same tense world they had known -- and together they fought the deadly menace of the triffids . . . This is top-notch science fiction -- expertly written by an author who combines realism and fantasy in a racing, action-packed story . . . “
FROM THE REAR FLAP OF THE DUST JACKET:
“John Wyndham was born and educated in England. He was in London during the blitz and then fought from Normandy to Germany with the Royal Signals . . . Published in England during the thirties, Mr. Wyndham has had stories in Collier’s and various science-fiction magazines in America since the war. THE DAY OF THE TRIFFIDS is his first book to be published in the United States“
