SYNOPSIS
No Second Spring, world-prize novel, introduced a newcomer who wisely refused to be rushed into a second book. Now comes it successor, substantiating the impression the first gave of not only a creative power but craftsmanship that was careful and artistically sound. The second book is a novel of the present, of Scotland and northern England over a span of forty years. In the characters of the two young Highlanders, striving to adapt themselves to Manchester and the world of trade, of their love for the same girl, one senses again the author's sureness of touch. Here are no false gestures -- she knows her characters as people, not pawns, and out of them, as people, her story grows.
