This copy comes with a note inside stating that this book came from the library of Archibald Primrose (1847-1929) 5th Earl of Roseberry, and further states that "while a contemporary of both Hamilton and Churchill his annotations are not particulary interesting"

Winston Churchill's first book in which he details his experiences accompanying the British army during the Second Boer War and continues after the events described in his previous book London to Ladysmith via Pretoria. This volume has extracts from the diary of Lieutenant H. Frankland, a prisoner of war at Pretoria.
