Hamish Henderson's 'Elegies for the Dead in Cyrenaica ' first appeared in book form in 1948 (as with the copy listed here), but some of the Elegies were written as early as March 1943, and some existed in the fragmentary form as early as the autumn of 1942, when Hamish was first in action, at the Battle of Alam Halfa. The Elegies gained the Somerset Maugham Award . . Afterwards, Henderson himself became a name among others of the bravest of brave, Italian partisans. The book is thus the work of a man concerned not only with contemplating and recording a mementous piece of the world's history, but also with changing the world, even if it sees the war of 1939-45 not so much as action to change the world for the better but to prevent its change for the worse.
