CONDITION
A very good copy of the true first edition. The dust jacket remains unclipped and in very good condition with a couple of closed tears to the edges (which have been repaired from the inside with archival tape) and a little rubbing to the spine ends and corners, but overall in good+ condition. The jacket is now protected in a removable mylar sleeve. The boards and spine are very good. Endpapers good with a little browning towards the gutters. All contents present and pages very good throughout. No foxing, stains, tears or previous owner's name or writing. Overall a very good first US edition.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Hemingway's novel was published just after the end of the Spanish Civil War and is informed by his experiences reporting on the conflict for the North American Newspaper Alliance. Many of the characters in this graphic exploration of the brutality of war are based on real people, some semi-fictionalized, others drawn directly from life. It was adapted for screen in 1943, directed by Sam Wood, starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Actress.
