This new illustrated and fully annotated edition of a truly remarkable book originally published 300 years ago will be an indispensable acquisition for all those who love the Hebrides and want to understand more of their intriguing history. In July 1703 A Description of the Western Islands of Scotland by Martin Martin was published in London. Though not the first account of Scottish, and more especially Hebridean, islands it was the first to cover them at length; and because it was researched and composed by someone who was born in Skye in the 17th century it gave a picture of an older island world a unmatched for its intimate detail and immediacy.
