Chambered Cairns of Orkney
An Inventory of the Structures and Their Contents The Chambered Cairns of Scotland

By Professor James L. Davidson and Professor Audrey S Henshall

Published by Edinburgh University Press, 1990. First Edition. Hardback in dust jacket. 198 pages. Profusely illustrated in b&w.

A very good clean copy throughout in a very good dust jacket. No writing or names to the book. Overall very good.

Prehistorians interested in the neolithic period in Western Europe and anyone interested in the early history of Orkney, and the conservation or destruction of ancient monuments, will value this detailed survey of a uniquely important group of over seventy cairns. It is the only comprehensive survey and includes the first record of some newly discovered cairns.

The relatively long introduction deals with the past studies of the cairns; their environment and location; their complex structures; their use and deliberate closure; their contents (artefacts, human and animal bones); their dating, and a cautious assessment of their significance.

In the Inventory, the structure of each cairn is described, and new material is included from MS sources, and more extensively from direct examination of the remains. All the sites have been visited, and with few exceptions a plan of each cairn has been provided at a uniform scale, as well as additional maps, plans and illustrations. The finds from the cairns have been re-examined and in some cases re-drawn. All the artefacts are catalogued, and almost all are illustrated.
