Captain Marryat : The King’s Own : London: Macmillan, 1896

Binding design for “The King’s Own” by Albert Angus Turbayne

Published by Macmillan, London, 1896. First Thus. Hardback, elaborate gilt blocking on blue cloth. 8vo (7¼ x 4¾ inches). Gilt to all page edges. Peacock endpapers by Turbayne. 427pp. Illustrated by F. H. Townsend.

Here we have a popular Captain Marryat title married to a dynamic cover design by Turbayne in the art nouveau form of rhyming lines that emanate from under the ship’s prow. Turbayne is famous in the world of book design for his Peacock design for the Jane Austen books, also published by Macmillan.

Publishers of the later half of the 19th century competed for markets using elaborate bindings to attract their audiences, and this book announces A. A. Turbayne’s association with Macmillan, with the company motif in the crow’s nest and the artist’s monogram between the heads of the fantastical fish-like sea-monsters.

CONDITION
In very good condition. The binding is in fine condition with no tears to the cloth - the gilt design remains bright and clear. Binding good and square and with no leaning. Endpapers very good. Name written in pencil to the half-title page. All contents present including the protective tissue guard for the frontispiece. Title page and frontis very clean and the pages are in very good throughout and free from foxing and stains. Overall a fine copy of this scarce Turbayne edition.
