In the British Isles and the surrounding shallow seas, there are some 800 species of molluscs, of which about 600 are marine and the remainder freshwater or terrestrial. This book describes practically all the shell-bearing species and illustrates 355 representative examples, 124 in colour. The author, a well-known professional conchologist, is a past President of the Conchological Society of Great Britain and for many years has been in charge of the extensive Mollusca collections in the City of Liverpool Public Museums. She brings to the book a lifetime's experience, not only in naming species of shells but also in helping the less expert members of the public to do so.
