This is binding variant 1 with black paper-covered boards patterned in yellow, white, and red, with white cloth spine (there were 5 variant bindings). Hardback, 8vo, cloth spine and paper-covered boards. 192 pages. Includes a tissue‑guarded colour frontispiece and 11 plates—some in full colour—plus black‑and‑white photographs, including one of Woolf.
Particularly valued by scholars and collectors for containing the first appearance of Woolf’s college vignette.
Comprising a print run of 2000 copies, 950 of which were bound in November 1926 in a white cloth spine (in five binding variants), and 50 in vellum, with this copy being the primary tan binding. A further 250 copies were bound in 1927, with the remaining 750 copies being pulped in June 1956.
A diverse eclectic literary and arts magazine featuring writings by Virginia Woolf, Katherine Mansfield, Hilaire Belloc, W.H. Davies, Walter de la Mare, Hugh MacDiarmid, Charlotte Mew, Edwin Muir, Fredegond Shove (Woolf’s cousin), among others. Woolf contributed “A Woman’s College from Outside”, an early sketch that would later evolve into A Room of One’s Ow. Mansfield’s input includes two previously unpublished sketches, while the volume also showcases artwork by notable Scottish artists like Jessie M. King, Katherine Cameron, Phoebe Traquair, and Cecile Walton.
CONDITION
A very good copy. The binding is good as can be seen in the images provided. Endpapers good with a little age-toning. All contents present and pages good throughout. Overall a very good copy.
