Archeoastronomy is a subject which has captured public fascination since its roots in the Stonehenge and "megalithic astronomy" debates in the 1960's and 1970's. Although it began as a branch of the history of astronomy, archeoastronomy - together with its sister discipline, ethnoastronomy - has come to encompass much more. Rather than restricting itself to the roots of modern astronomy, it examines how people throughout history perceive celestial objects and integrate them into their view of the world, often in ways that are very different from twentieth century Western scientific approaches.
Astronomies and Cultures combines a fresh and intellectually stimulating approach to archeoastronomy and illustrates the broad scope, diversity and cultural significance of contemporary studies in this discipline undergoing rapid change. By combining approaches from archaeology, anthropology, ethnohistory, the classics - as well as astronomy itself - the methodological challenges of archeoastronomy are better defined and tackled. Each chapter is based on original research by acknowledged specialists, and provides and interpretative framework of wider cultural significance than any previous publication on this subject.
