Weapons and Warfare in Anglo-Saxon England by Sonia Chadwick Hawkes, offers a compelling and meticulously researched exploration of martial culture in early medieval England. Published as Monograph No. 21 by the University of Oxford’s Committee for Archaeology, the book delves into the archaeological, historical, and literary evidence surrounding Anglo-Saxon armaments and military practices. Hawkes, a respected authority in the field, synthesizes findings from burial sites, weapon typologies, and battlefield contexts to illuminate the evolution of warfare from the fifth to the eleventh century.

Of particular interest is the book’s interdisciplinary approach, blending archaeological evidence with literary sources to reveal the symbolic and practical roles of weapons in Anglo-Saxon society. It also touches on how warfare influenced political power and territorial control during this formative period.
