Gildas: New Approaches

Edited by Michael Lapidge & David Dumville

Published Boydell Press, 1984  8vo. Mauve cloth hardback binding with silver title in ochre dust-jacket. 244pp including bibliography and index.

This scholarly volume re-examines De Excidio Britanniae, the enigmatic 6th-century Latin text by Gildas, which is one of the few surviving sources on post-Roman Britain. Rather than mining it for historical facts, the contributors explore Gildas’s intellectual background, literary style, and cultural context—asking who he was, what traditions shaped his writing, and how his work was received in Ireland and on the Continent.

It’s a cornerstone for anyone studying:

Sub-Roman Britain

Early Christian Latin literature

Celtic intellectual history

Historiography and textual criticism

Condition

Very good. Dust-jacket remains un-clipped and is very good condition, little light fading to spine of dust jacket. Boards are excellent, text block is sound and tight. All contents present and pages are crisp and clean throughout and free from any names or writing etc. Overall a very good copy.

PLEASE NOTE: Over the next week or so we will be listing around 150 hard-to-find titles relating to welsh and scottish, medieval studies, icelandic sagas, celts, picts, archaeology, religious and spiritual beliefs, witchcraft and magic, medieval women . . . so keep an eye on our latest auctions
