The Devil’s Devices or Control versus Service
by Douglas Pepler, Illustrated by Eric Gill – First Edition
Published at The Hampshire House Workshops in Hammersmith, London 1915
Hardback 8vo cloth spine and red paper boards. 123pp
Offered here is a scarce first edition of The Devil’s Devices or Control versus Service, published in 1915 at The Hampshire House Workshops, Hampshire Hog Lane. Written by Douglas Pepler and illustrated by Eric Gill, this volume represents a significant collaboration between two central figures of the Arts and Crafts movement. The book is bound in its original cloth and retains the distinctive typographic and illustrative style for which Gill is celebrated.
The contents include Pepler’s reflections on social and moral questions of service and control, presented in a manner that blends philosophy with literary craft. Gill’s illustrations are integral to the work, providing visual commentary that enhances the text’s meaning and aesthetic appeal. This edition is notable not only for its rarity but also for its place in the history of early 20th-century printing and design, reflecting the ideals of the Ditchling community and the Hampshire House Workshops.
