Celtic Myth & Legend Poetry & Romance
By Charles Squire
Published by Gresham Publishing Company, London, [1912]. First Edition. Hardback, thick, 8vo, decorative art nouveau cloth binding in black and gilt. top edge gilt. Olive endpapers. pp xiv, 450. Illustrated with 4 colour and numerous monochrome plates, all present.
ABOUT THIS BOOK
Full of imagination, adventure, and romance, the Celtic myths and legends provide a fascinating insight into the ancestors of the peoples of the British Isles. Their gods and heroes were larger than life, and the Celts worshipped them at huge stone monuments, open to the sun and sky, wind and rain. Today, these pagan stones are testaments to those gods, and the hills and plains keep their memories. The author tells us who the Celtic people were and what their religions were. He traces the myths from their beginning to their end and explains how they were changed and corrupted over the course of centuries. The author ends the book with a fascinating chapter on the survival of Celtic paganism into the early twentieth century. For the reader who wishes to explore the subject in depth, the author cites many other references for further reading. There are lively illustrations of mythological scenes and photographs of places of historical interest throughout the book. At the end are an extensive bibliography, and index, and a table of pronunciation of the more difficult Gaelic words.
