David Douglas, Edinburgh, 1895. First Edition. Complete in Two volumes in two. 8vo (22.0 x 16.0 cm). Hardback, green cloth with gilt title to spine, 8vo, wine clay endpapers, 638 pp. [I: xxii, 306, (i); II: 309, (and xxiv - advertisements)]; two half titles, two photographic title pages (tissue-guarded), one folded panorama, one multi-folded full colour map mounted on linen, 28 mostly tissue-guarded plates [18 unnumbered photogravure plates; one chromolithographed plate, nine engraved or lithographed plates showing fossils (including three double-sized plates], several fine text illustrations.
CONDITION
A very good first edition. The cloth bindings are in very good condition with a couple of small chips to the head of the spines. Inner and outer joints sound and with no cracking. Endpapers very good and with previous owners bookplates (ornithologist and curator of the British Museum of Natural History, David Armitage Bannerman). All contents present and pages in good clean condition throughout. No names or writing to the book. Overall a very good copy.
David Armitage Bannerman (27 November 1886 – 6 April 1979) was a British ornithologist and author. From 1919 to 1952 he was Curator of the British Museum of Natural History (now called the Natural History Museum, London)
