A Critical Inquiry Into the Scottish Language
With the View of Illustrating the Rise and Progress of Civilization in Scotland

By Francisque-Michel

Published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, 1882. Limited to 500 copies of which this is number 13. Thick 4to, Quarter Leather, xiii + 457 pages.

Each of the chapters deals with an aspect of Scots life e.g. law, medicine, clothing, sea terms etc and looks at the Scots words connected with it. He argues against the view that Scots is merely a dialect of old English with trifling variations. The book is an attempt to illustrate the extent to which French influence pervaded the life of the Scottish people. An interesting and uncommon book.
