Published by Macmillan and Co : London, 1876. First thus, with the American edition published by Macmillan earlier the same year. Complete in two volumes, bound as one. Full leather binding measuring 7.5" by 5". In a Bickers and Son prize binding for Christ Church Canterbury. xvi, 356pp; xiii, [1], 331pp. Illustrated, with 26 plates to volume I and 17 plates to volume II.
A collections of extracts from J F Campbell's journals and letters sent home during his 1874 world tour trip to America, Japan, China, Java, Ceylon and India. The trip was from July 1874 to July 1875.
John Francis Campbell was a renowned Scottish author and scholar who specialised in Celtic studies. One of his most popular works is the four volume Popular Tales of the West Highlands.
CONDITION
Externally, generally smart with some rubbing to the spine, particularly at the head and tail. Minor rubbing to extremities. Some cracking to the spine egde at the front top. Spine has also faded in colour as expected. Prize bookplate to front pastedown from King's School Canterbury, awarded to W G Weeks in 1902. Inner hinge has archival paper reinforcing it. Binder's stamp to verso of front endpaper, Bickers and Son. Gift inscription to recto of front endpaper, 'To my friend Roelink, with best wishes R M Colebrook June 1950'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with instances of occasional light spots. Overall Condition: Very Good
