The author, Thomas Constable, 1812-1881, was an Edinburgh printer and the book was illustrated by his friend Albert Cay, probably of the family of Edinburgh wine merchants. A wry fantasy story of a younger son, 'for everyone with the slightest pretension to Fairy lore is well aware that eldest sons are of no use whatsoever, except at the beginning of the first chapter, to meet an old woman in a wood.' 

CONDITION
A very good copy. The cloth binding is in very good condition with fractional rubbing and light signs of age but generally very good. Endpapers very good and inner joints are sound with no cracking. All contents present and pages clean throughout. Some foxing to the verso of frontispiece and this has bled through a little to the frontispiece a little (see last two images). Overall a very good copy.
