Published by D. Appleton & Co, New York, 1870. First US Edition. Large Hardback, 15 x 11 inches, cloth binding with gilt titles and decoration. Illustrated with a colour frontispiece and fifteen full page wood-engraved plates by Richard Doyle printed in colour by Edmund Evans.
This book once belonged to Charles Edwin Wilbour, an American journalist and Egyptologist. Wilbour is noted as one of the discoverers of the Elephantine Papyri and the creator of the first English translation of Les Misérables. His ink ownership stamps are found at the foot of each plate.
CONDITION
A very good first US edition. The cloth binding is very with no tears, Inner and outer hinges secure with no cracking. Endpapers professionally replaced. All contents present and pages in good condition throughout with some light spotting to the outer margins and the verso of plates but generally very good for age. Overall a very good first American edition.
