Men and Manners in America
By Thomas Hamilton, the author of Cyril Thornton
Published by William Blackwood, Edinburgh and London, 1834. Hardback, cloth, 8vo, pp xxxvi, 454, [ii]. Illustrated with a frontispiece of the author.
A humorous and lightly satirical account of the American and Canadian way of life. The author's impressions of Niagara Falls, York, Kingston, Montreal, Quebec, and the politics of Upper and Lower Canada. Hamilton's comments include interesting references to his voyage down the Mississippi, squatters he observed along the banks, a slave dealer and his merchandise that he encountered aboard the steamboat, opportunities open to emigrant tradesmen in the South, and the Catholic church's ministrations to the poor in New Orleans. He also comments on slavery, to which he was strongly opposed.
