For sale we have a collection of 12 vintage pocket-sized Italian literature volumes titled "Biblioteca Poetica Italiana Antica e Moderna". Published in Parigi (Paris) in 1840, this rare series was produced by the historic publishing house Baudry (located at 9, Quai Malaquais).
8 of the 12 volumes consist of Ludovico Ariosto's epic masterpiece, "L'Orlando Furioso" and the other 4 volumes consists of Torquato Tasso's renowned 16th-century epic, "Gerusalemme Liberata". Other volumes in this series feature Dante's La Divina Commedia, Francesco Petrarca's Le Rime, Vittoria Alfieri's Tragedie, and Giovanni Battista Guarini.
The Biblioteca Poetica Italiana curated by Antonio Buttura and published by Baudry was a multi-author anthology spanning 30 volumes in total . . L'Orlando Furioso and Gerusalemme Liberata are complete in their volumes here.
These are miniature softcover/paperback editions (often categorized as ediz. mignon or pocket books). They feature ornate, decorative black typography borders framing the central text on a yellow paper wrapper.
During the 19th century, Parisian publishers like Baudry specialized heavily in printing high-quality foreign language literature—especially Italian and English classics—for expatriates, travellers, and collectors across Europe.
CONDITION
All 12 volumes in good condition. Covers good with light signs of age and a little rubbing to the spine ends. Pages good throughout and free from foxing, stains etc. Overall a good lot.
