The Club; in A Dialogue Between a Father and Son
By James Puckle
This Edition of Puckle's Club is Printed for the Proprietor by John Johnson and sold by Longmans, Hurst, Rees, Orme and Brown, London, 1817. Half-leather binding with marble sides and house in a marble slipcase. The book measures 27.5 x 19 cm. pp.xvi, Gauffered gilt edges. 128; frontispiece, decorations & vignettes throughout engraved on wood by Branston, Thompson, White, Hughes & others after Thurston. Thurston's designs first appeared in a deluxe edition of 1817, but according to Singer, are shown to far better effect here due to the printing skills of Whittingham.
Puckle's satirical study of 'characters to expose vice & folly' first appeared in 1711 but the enlarged fifth edition of 1733 is reproduced here.
