London: Printed for Ridgways, Date: 1816. In two volumes. [3], vi-xv, [1], 490; [2], 253, [1], 135pp, [1]. Without half-titles. Contemporary half-calf, marbled paper boards.
The first edition of a controversial pamphlet, by friend of Lord Byron, John Cam Hobhouse, 1st Baron Broughton (1786-1869). The work, written from Paris in 1815, saw Hobhouse showing support for the House of Bourbon and sympathy with Bonaparte, for which both the French translator and French printer were imprisoned.
CONDITION
A good two-volume set. The leather bindings are good with some cracking to the leather at the joints but with all boards securely attached. All contents present except for half-titles. Pages very clean throughout. Overall a good copy.
