A Sporting Tour Through the Northern Parts of England
And Great Part of the Highlands of Scotland Including Remarks on English and Scottish Landscape
By Colonel T. Thornton
Published by Vernor and Hood, London, 1804. 1st Edition. Illustrated. Hardback 8vo moire silk boards with leather spine and corners. Embellished with 16 engravings, by Messrs, Medland, Pouncy, Landseer, Peltro, etc. 312 pages.
Colonel Thomas Thornton's Sporting Tour 1804 is a detailed account of his extensive tour of northern England and the Highlands of Scotland. The tour, which took place around 1786, was planned with precision, akin to a military campaign, and included a plethora of supplies. Thornton's detailed and exhaustive journal, which also includes descriptions of 'sport' such as fishing, shooting, hunting, and hawking, is both entertaining and informative.
