Printed for T. Cadell, London, 1789. First Edition. Complete Three Volumes. Full leather. pp 428, 422, 445. With all 7 plates called for, 3 of which are fold-outs. Volume I has a fold out of a map of Switzerland, plud 2 engraved plates (one of Bridge of Wettingen and the other of the Lakes of Thun and Brientz). Volume II has a large fold-out map of Mount Blanc, plus a fold-out view of the Chain of Alps and Hills, and a fold-out of the Head of a BEarded Vulture, plus 1 engraved plate (Figure of the Bouquetin). All plates are listed at the rear of volume I and II and as mentioned are all present.
CONDITION
A good complete set. The calf bindings have rubbing and wear but all boards still attached. Inner joints good. Marble endpapers good. All contents present to all volumes and pages in good clean condition throughout. All fold-outs are good. Overall a good complete set.
William Coxe FRS (17 March 1748 – 8 June 1828) was an English historian and priest who served as a travelling companion and tutor to nobility from 1771 to 1786. He wrote numerous historical works and travel chronicles. Ordained a deacon in 1771, he served as a rector and then archdeacon of Bemerton near Salisbury from 1786 until his death.
