A New Version of the Psalms of David fitted to the Tunes used in Churches
By N Brady and N Tate
Printed by J Roberts, for the Company of Stationers, London, 1743. Contemporary full leather binding, red calf with gilt decoration to both upper and lower boards and spine, gilt to all page edges, marble endpapers, pp [1], title page, 230, [4].
CONDITION
Good condition. The original leather binding is in good condition with a couple of very small dents to rear board, no cracking to the hinges and in good sound condition. The spine has no title or title label and was never bound with one. Endpapers are good with some scuffing. The title page has had a piece torn from the top but has been repaired (see photo). All contents present. Pages in good condition throughout and free from foxing and stains, perhaps the odd little grubby mark here and there but overall very good.
The metrical version of the Psalms, first published in 1696. Despite early objections by some clergymen that the work was "too poetical" it attained almost universal use in England during the 18th century. "Brady's share in the work was sneered at by Swift in his Remarks on Dr. Gibb's Psalms.
