The research described in this Memoir was the outcome of a project initiated by Mr E J Wayland, Director of the Geological Survey from 1919 to 1939. The field work connected with the investigation was carried out during the latter half of 1939 when Professor van Riet Lowe was accompanied throughout by Mr Wayland
