Sir James Edward Alexander was an extraordinary man, one of those that only the Eighteenth Century produced. A professional solder he saw service in the Cape Colony, New Zealand and Crimea for example. He was private secretary to Benjamin d'Urban and was instrumental in the placement of Cleopatra's Needle on the Embankment. This is an account of his journey of exploration into Namaqualand and Damaraland 1836-37.
