Early Editions : A Bibliographical Survey of the Works of Some Popular Modern Authors

By John Herbert Slater

Publishd by Kegan Paul, Trench, Trubner & Co, London, 1894. First Edition. Quarter leather binding, Royal 8vo, pp. xiv, 340 (last blank), index.

Authors surveyed in this work include the Brownings, Burns, Byron, Dickens, Morris, Ruskin, Shelley, Stevenson and Swinburne. Forty years before the exposure of Thomas J. Wise as a forger, Slater questioned some of his forgeries, in particular relating to works of George Elliot and Swinburne. Of Swinburne's Siena, Slater states: 'A pirated reprint is occasionally to be met with, and, having been very carefully executed, it is almost impossible to detect it from the original. It is in every respect but one a masterly production, the only apparent defect being in the description of the paper, which it was probably found impossible to match exactly. There is no doubt that many of these forged copies are on the market'
