THE ELLES, PYE, SKENE AND LIDDELL FAMILY HISTORY

For sale we have a rare and unpublished family history that includes the Alice Liddell family. Alice Liddell was the girl who inspired Charles Lutwidge Dodgson, aka Lewis Carroll to write Alice in Wonderland. This book was never printed for the public and we are assuming only a few copies were printed for family members.

The book contains 4 main chapters, one for each of the 4 families, and included are many photographic illustrations, including a couple of Alice Liddell, along with a couple of watercolours by Dean Liddell & Alice Liddell.

This family history, although not stated, was written in 1996 by Neil Patrick Moncrieff Elles and was intended for family only. This copy was sent to a Cecil Howman who was the wife of Lt. Col. Ross Howman who was repsonsible for raising the Assam Regiment in India in 1941. The book has a letter from Neil Elles to Cecil Howman.

Neil Patrick Moncrieff Elles, who was a barrister, was married to Diana Louie Elles, Baroness Elles (19 July 1921 – 17 October 2009), She was also a barrister and was also a United Nations representative from the United Kingdom. She was a delegate to the European Parliament for over a decade.

The book contains other people of importance such as Henry George Liddell who was the joint author (with Mr Scott) of the great Lexicon, which is still regarded as a foundation stone in Greek Scholarship. He was also Dean of Christ Church and Headmaster of Westminster School. He was the father of Alice who persuaded Lewis Carroll in 1862 to write down the story of Alice in Wonderland. ANother name mentioned in this family history is Lieutenant-General Sir William Kidston Elles KCB (5 May 1837 – 5 August 1896). Elles was commissioned as an ensign in the 38th Regiment of Foot in June 1854. He served with the Regiment at the siege of Sebastopol in 1855 during the Crimean War and then during the Indian Mutiny in 1857. He also served in the Hazara campaign of 1868 and then became Deputy Assistant Quarter Master General with the Intelligence Branch in 1877, Assistant Adjutant General at Horse Guards in 1881 and a brigade commander with the Madras Army in 1885. After taking part in the Third Anglo-Burmese War in 1885, he became Adjutant-General, India in 1889 and then commanded the Hazara Expedition in 1891. He also served as A.D.C. to Queen Victoria from 1881-90. He went on to be Commander-in-Chief Bengal Command in April 1895 before dying in office from cholera in August 1896.

The book also mentions Patrick George Skene (Skene of Pitlour (Halyards), the Rev James Elles, Lieutenant General Sir Hugh Jamieson Elles, Sir Edmund Elles, and Clare (Lady Elles) among others.

The Skene family chapter is interesting with its ties to Pitlour, Myres Castle, and the Falkland Estate. Colonel Patrick George Moncrieff Skene is mentioned as well as William Baillie Skene who we believe was an author and tresurer at Christ Church Oxford.
