A Humorous Tale Written Principally by a Lady of Ninety

Edited With Additional Verses by John Ruskin

New Illustrations by Kate Greenaway

1st Edition Thus 1885

This is a children's story that was originally published in 1823 with 18 hand coloured woodcuts. John Ruskin and Kate Greenaway collaborated on this reprint from 1885, with the original woodcut illustrations of the 1823 edition being given in outline only, so that readers could colour them. Ruskin added four original verses to explain how the cats were educated, and Kate Greenaway provided four additional pencil sketches for the new verses.

Published by George Allen in 1885, first edition thus. The book is bound in greyish cloth covered boards with gold titling and a gold illustration on the front board. It measures approx. 7 1/2" x 4 7/8" with iv, a frontispiece and facsimile of the 1823 title page, and 18 pages (printed on one side only of each leaf).

The case of the book is in very good condition with some shelf wear and light soiling on the boards. The spine ends are lightly bumped and there is a small bit of damage to the cloth near the top of the front spine edge - see photograph.

The contents are tight and clean with some foxing on the endpapers. There is a small private ex-libris label on the front fixed endpaper and a thin split down the bottom 2" of the spine gutter of the front endpapers
